Struck by cholera, the crew of the ship start to die and the captain sets Sarah, Richard, Lilli and a healthy crew member on a lifeboat in an attempt to preserve their lives. Taken in by Sarah, a widow with an infant baby girl Lilli, Richard (Paddy) is cared for in a return to civilization.
The underwater cinematography is gorgeous. The story is interesting and suspense is maintained about their ultimate fate, and theres a nugget of a good idea for a theme in there about how two kids might develop entirely on their own. All those shots were more hidden and discreet. One way that Return to the Blue Lagoon managed to get away from underage scandals was to keep all the nude scenes distant from the intimate scenes. The main draw is the natural beauty of both the surroundings and the protagonists, which is considerable. Jovovich, who was a model before stepping into acting, caught the eye of many in the 1991 film even though it was not received all that well. Established in the first film, the only word Paddy ever says is "Richard", so the crew assumes Richard is the infant's name. THE BLUE LAGOON is about eye candy, plain and simple.
